Our Approach to Reading
The teaching of reading begins with phonics teaching in Foundation. This continues in Year One and Two and sometimes into Key Stage Two when there is a need. Children learn their letter sounds and names and then apply these to word building. We use both Letters and Sounds and Jolly Phonics as the basis for our teaching of phonics. These are both recognised as synthetic phonic schemes. The children will also learn a variety of other key words by sight.
Children read individually, in small groups and as a whole class. We encourage parents to support children with their reading at home and children have access to a wide range of books both from schemes such as Oxford Reading Tree, Ginn, Heinemann Discovery World and real books. These books are banded into different colour bands to determine their level/difficulty. Within each band there are a variety of different genres including different types of stories, information and poetry books. As well as being able to read the text, children are encouraged to discuss the content of the book and their opinions about people, places and events.
